Not your average band website
Anberlin is a band. They needed a website. They wanted a kickass immersive website. They got what they wanted.
My Role
I was contracted by Squad to design and develop (in Flash) a site that showcased and supported Anberlin's latest album Cities. We decided on a concept in which users could interact with a 360degree interactive view of planet Earth, zooming into 14 different cities, each representing different content relating to the band or the album.
Art Direction & Design
The art direction of the site was based on the album artwork which was already created and had a dominate black & white grainy quality to it. I took that theme and ran, adding bits of orange as a spot color throughout (see below).
As users visited various cities throughout the "world" they received stamps in their passport for quick access back to the location. In this sense the site created an immersive experience that encouraged exploration.
Using Google Maps images, we created zoom transitions into the cities that gave the feeling of flying into the Earth.
Technical Details
Since this site was developed before PaperVision 3D or other similar 3D APIs were reliable for use in profession applications, the Globe was created by a 3D artist and exported as individual frames which were scrubbed through using AcrionScript. There was also a nightime version of the planet that was displayed to users after 8pm every night.
